According to ABC News, the Newcastle Knights ended Canberra Raiders’ season with a 30-24 win in Canberra, while St George Illawarra Dragons beat Cronulla Sutherland Sharks 24-16 in a derby at Kogarah on August 9, 2026.

Canberra trailed 26-24 in the final 10 minutes when Dane Gagai and Corey Horsburgh tangled at a play-the-ball. The Raiders were initially awarded a penalty, but it was overturned after Horsburgh slapped Gagai over the head. Horsburgh was sin binned.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said his side should have had the chance to level the scores, describing Horsburgh’s action as “a f***ing brain explosion”. Stuart said Horsburgh’s sin bin was warranted, noting players were not allowed to commit that action under the rules.

The Dragons recorded only their third win of the season and their second derby victory in their past 13 matches against the Sharks, keeping their bid to avoid the wooden spoon alive. Addin Fonua-Blake was sin binned and placed on report for a shoulder charge on Dragons forward Hamish Stewart.

Sharks centre Jesse Ramien left the field with a suspected pectoral injury, while Ronaldo Mulitalo played the second half under an injury cloud. Separately, Melbourne Storm halfback Cameron Munster had a one-match ban for dangerous contact downgraded after further medical information. He can accept a $750 fine for a grade one charge with an early plea.
