According to Cnbc, the pan-European Stoxx 600 has remained resilient in 2026, rising 10% so far. The index, which tracks 600 large-, medium- and small-capitalization companies across 17 European countries, is slightly behind its North American counterpart, which has returned 13.5% over the same period.

European equities have historically drawn less investor enthusiasm than U.S. stocks and some fast-growing Asian markets, reflecting fewer high-growth companies, shallower capital markets and a less compelling long-term earnings growth story. A jump in government fiscal spending at the beginning of 2025 helped bring the market to life, while this year’s performance has been more nuanced.

Goldman Sachs sought to challenge what it described as myths about European investing in an August 10 note. Its analysts said European banks have considerably outperformed the Magnificent 7 since 2022. They also said the Stoxx has outperformed the S&P 500 since the start of 2025 despite a tariff shock and an energy supply crisis.

The bank argued that Chinese competition is not a major threat to much of Europe’s stock market because its largest sectors — including financials, pharmaceuticals, technology, energy, utilities, telecoms, aerospace and defense — are not especially exposed to low-cost Chinese imports. Autos account for just 1% of Europe’s market capitalization, Goldman said. Yet the Stoxx Autos index is down 16% year-to-date, while Volkswagen and Stellantis have fallen 27.6% and 51.9%, respectively.

BNP Paribas Asset Management sees Europe as more likely to benefit from artificial intelligence than develop it. Goldman said Europe trails in data-center rollouts and frontier modelling, but added that being behind on the AI trade could offer investors a hedge against risks, particularly those linked to Chinese competition.
