According to Cnbc, U.S. Treasury yields rose Tuesday as renewed Middle East tensions lifted global government borrowing costs to their highest levels since early last year. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield climbed more than 3 basis points to 4.792%, after reaching its highest level since Jan. 14, 2025 earlier in the day.

The 30-year Treasury bond yield rose more than 1 basis point to 5.266%, while the 2-year Treasury note yield increased more than 4 basis points to 4.398%. The 10-year yield is a key benchmark for mortgages, auto loans and credit card debt. A basis point equals 0.01%, and bond yields move inversely to prices.

Traders were weighing developments in the Middle East after U.S. Central Command said U.S. forces started striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in Iran. U.S. forces had earlier launched fresh strikes against Iran, while a tanker was hit by unknown projectiles off Oman’s coast in the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices rose, with West Texas Intermediate futures settling 5.2% higher at $90.22 per barrel and Brent crude advancing 4.6% to $94.65.

Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, UBS chief investment officer of the Americas and global head of equities, said inflation concerns remained elevated with no clear path to reopening the Strait after six months of war. She also cited uncertainty around the Federal Reserve policy outlook, fiscal concerns and rising AI-related debt issuance, saying yield volatility was likely to persist in the near term.

Investors also watched the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, which concluded Tuesday, and awaited nonfarm payrolls figures expected Friday. The August ISM Manufacturing Index fell 1 point from July to 54.6, below the 55.3 expected by economists polled by Dow Jones, while July job openings were roughly in line with expectations.
