According to BBC News, Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 5-7 6-2 to win the US Open and claim his second Grand Slam singles title. The German top seed overcame a partisan Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd hoping to see a rare American men’s major champion.

Zverev, 29, had lifted his first major title at the French Open earlier in 2026. His victory in New York came six years after he lost the 2020 US Open final. He will remain world number two, while closing the gap on top-ranked Jannik Sinner.

Shelton, the eighth seed, was bidding to become the first American man to win a major singles title since Andy Roddick in 2003. He lost serve in the opening game and Zverev controlled the first two sets, using his first serve and targeting Shelton’s backhand in baseline exchanges.

The American raised hopes by taking the third set after converting his third break opportunity, but Zverev reasserted control early in the fourth. Shelton sent a return long on championship point, with Zverev initially unaware he had secured the title before his team alerted him to the score.

Shelton will rise to a career-high fourth in the world when the latest ATP rankings are released on Monday. The 2026 Canadian Open champion had reached his first Grand Slam final after defeating several big-hitting opponents, including Carlos Alcaraz in a quarter-final that ended at 3:34am.
