According to ABC News, the Socceroos lost 4-2 to Brazil in an international friendly at Lang Park in Brisbane, watched by a record football crowd of 52,423. Brazil recovered after Australia took a 2-1 first-half lead in a contest that ebbed and flowed across 90 minutes.

Brazil began strongly and Vanderson scored with a strike in the opening three minutes. Goalkeeper Pat Beach then made two saves to deny Raphinha. Australia responded by regaining control in midfield: Alessandro Circati turned in a corner at the back post after VAR overturned an initial offside ruling, before Connor Metcalfe struck from the edge of the area to put the hosts ahead.

Brazil levelled on the stroke of half-time when captain Raphinha converted a penalty following a lengthy VAR review of a challenge by Harry Souttar. The second half became fractious when Endrick and Souttar clashed, with Aziz Behich joining a small melee in front of the Socceroos bench.

The visitors retook the lead through Bruno Guimarães, who finished a move involving Vinícius Júnior and Endrick. Vinícius Júnior later won a penalty after being fouled in the area and converted it himself to seal Brazil’s victory. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said Australia pressed well, were organised and made it difficult for his side to build from the back, describing the Socceroos as “a very good team.”

Australia coach Tony Popovic said the match was another “big step forward” for the Socceroos. He pointed to the team’s response after conceding early against Brazil and said the players had gained confidence from competing against major nations at the World Cup.
