According to ABC News, finance presenter Alan Kohler will retire from the ABC at the end of the year after a 31-year career with the public broadcaster. Kohler, 74, said he was ready to spend more time with his family, including his six grandchildren.
Kohler joined the ABC in 1995 as business and economics correspondent for the 7.30 Report and later hosted Inside Business. For the past 24 years, he has been the lead finance presenter on the 7pm News, explaining financial markets in a distinctive format often introduced with the words, “Now, here’s an interesting graph.”
Before moving to television, Kohler built a career in print journalism, including roles as editor of The Australian Financial Review and The Age. He also worked as a chanticleer columnist for the AFR and later became senior business columnist for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
ABC managing director Hugh Marks said Kohler had made an extraordinary contribution to the organisation and the nation, helping Australians understand complex issues with insight, clarity, warmth and humour. Kohler currently writes a weekly column and hosts the Friday podcast That’s Business. He is expected to continue his association with the ABC through one-off specials.
