According to Allafrica, the African Union Commission has called on Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to exercise maximum restraint as tensions rise among the three member states. In a statement issued in Addis Ababa on Oct. 1, the commission said it was following the situation with concern and warned against actions or statements that could further destabilise the region.

The commission said the three governments should refrain from conduct that could escalate tensions and undermine regional peace and stability. It urged Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt to preserve communication channels between Addis Ababa, Asmara and Cairo as tensions increase across the Horn of Africa.

It also called on the countries to address their differences through established diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue, in line with the principles of the Constitutive Act of the African Union. The commission said preserving communication was important to reducing the risk of further escalation.

The AU Commission said it was ready to support efforts toward de-escalation, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of differences, in consultation with the countries concerned. The statement did not provide further details on the tensions referenced by the commission.
