According to ABC News, outback artisans, entertainers and businesses are seeking roles in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games as Queensland works through preparations. Communities more than 1,000 kilometres from Brisbane are proposing contributions spanning Olympic emblems, ceremonies, merchandise and tourism, hoping the event delivers opportunities across the state.
Opal miner Daniel Black said it would be a “dream” to see Australian opals featured on the world stage, including in gifts for dignitaries, medals or the Olympic torch. Mr Black, president of the Queensland Boulder Opal Association, said Australia supplies more than 90 per cent of the world’s opals and that the Games could help people understand where different types of opal are found. He said he had already held early discussions with the government about possible uses for opals and benefits for small western towns.
In Winton, Amanda Lyn-Pearson, co-founder of comedy and circus troupe The Crackup Sisters, is training a team of whip crackers in the hope they could perform in opening or closing ceremonies. The 17-member group, aged from four to 58, has performed at Winton’s Dustarena. Ms Pearson said stock whip cracking, acrobatics, hula hoop, kelpie dogs, larrikin humour and dry comedy could provide an authentic Queensland element for the Games.
Tambo Teddies has proposed a koala mascot called Bunji, a name chosen after the business asked its social media audience to name the character. Co-owner Alison Shaw said Bunji means friendship. She said the Toowoomba facility was ready to make merchandise, including items linked to cockatoo-inspired emblems, whether from sheepskin or other fabrics. Ms Shaw said the Games should create opportunities beyond Queensland’s south-east corner.
Longreach Mayor Tony Rayner said supplying an event on the scale of the Olympics presented challenges and required early planning so regional businesses could bid for work. He also pointed to tourism potential, with international visitors and others attending the Olympics potentially travelling from Brisbane to remote areas. Brisbane 2032 was contacted for comment.
