According to ABC News, Christopher Mark Whitty has pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to threaten serious harm against Gosford state MP Liesl Tesch.

Whitty, 43, was charged in August after allegedly using Facebook to make threats of violence and statements indicating an intention to find Ms Tesch in public and cause her harm. The matter was heard in Gosford Local Court, where he entered the guilty plea.

He has been on conditional bail since August. The conditions bar him from going within 100 metres of Ms Tesch, limit him to one mobile phone and SIM card, and prohibit him from entering Gosford except to attend court.

Ms Tesch is the Labor member for Gosford and parliamentary secretary for families, communities and disability inclusion. At the time of the incident, the former Paralympian said the threats made her question the value of using social media as an MP.

She said women in public life, particularly female journalists, receive much of the harm caused online. Research cited by ABC News from Women for Election found that 90 per cent of 110 women who had run for or been elected to office could identify an experience of online abuse or intimidation. Half said they had considered not running again or withdrawing from a race.

Whitty is due to face a sentencing hearing in December. ABC News said it contacted Ms Tesch for comment.
