According to ABC News, Sunshine Coast tattoo artist Mady Peters created a playful, colourful Pride Round guernsey for the Gold Coast Suns AFLW team, working with players Lily Mithen and Katie Lynch. Peters, also known as Pokey Pokes, was given one key brief for the 2026 design: make it fun.
The bright jumper includes a rainbow football boot, a carabiner and a cartoon dolphin holding a non-binary flag. Peters said the boot recognised LGBTQIA+ support for women’s football, while the carabiner has historical associations with the women-loving-women community. She said the colours and characters reflected Pride Round’s focus on self-expression, celebration and showing up authentically.
Peters said she hoped the round would help queer people celebrate their identities. Mithen said she and Lynch wanted the design to convey their “loud and fun and silly” personalities. She described the LGBTQIA+ community as having been “woven into the fabric of the AFLW from the very beginning”, while Lynch said football had been a place where she felt accepted.
Julia Chiera, the AFL Players Association’s head of AFLW, said women’s football had offered a welcoming environment for many queer people at community level before the national competition began. She said further work was needed on inclusion in the men’s game, which does not have a dedicated Pride Round, and that support should be demonstrated throughout the season. The Suns will wear the guernsey for a final time against the Adelaide Crows in Adelaide on Saturday afternoon.
