Arabic version: مارتينيز يستهدف العودة خلال أسابيع بعد العملية الجراحية
According to BBC News, Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez says he expects to be fit “in a few weeks” after undergoing an operation following Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory at Everton.
The 34-year-old Argentina international was injured in a second-half collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. He received treatment for eight minutes before leaving the pitch on a stretcher and was taken to hospital. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said Martinez had suffered a concussion.
Posting on social media on Sunday while wearing a hospital gown, Martinez said: “Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well.” He added that the win and clean sheet were most important before saying: “In a few weeks we’ll be back.”
Mike Penders replaced Martinez at Everton to make his Premier League debut and appears set to play in Chelsea’s next three matches at least: league games against Tottenham and Manchester United, with a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool in between. The 21-year-old joined from Belgian club Genk for £17m in 2024.
Alonso said Penders has “personality”, is “brave” and has Chelsea’s full trust. The manager said the goalkeeper had done well when called upon in cup matches and stressed the importance of players being ready to perform when needed.
