According to BBC News, Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix, his first for Ferrari and first in more than three years.
The seven-time world champion beat Mercedes driver George Russell by 0.009 seconds, with the pair locking out the front row. Hamilton’s 105th career pole was his first since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix and makes him the oldest driver to take pole since Mario Andretti drove for Ferrari at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified third, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes title contender Kimi Antonelli. Verstappen will start fourth after a one-place penalty, moving Antonelli up to fourth on the grid. Antonelli can secure the world title on Sunday unless Russell wins while he finishes below ninth, or Hamilton wins while the Italian scores no points.
Hamilton said Ferrari had recovered from an engine issue on Friday and improved the car’s set-up. Verstappen said traffic and a lock-up at the stadium-section hairpin ruined a lap that had been on course to challenge for pole.
McLaren’s Lando Norris qualified sixth. Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad and Pierre Gasly completed the top 10. Fernando Alonso stopped on track after a water leak in the energy recovery system during qualifying for Aston Martin.
