According to ABC News, the Tasmanian Electoral Commission has finalised the Hobart City Council count, confirming that two women won places on the nine-member council after early figures had raised the prospect of an all-male result.
Louise Elliot was elected seventh and Zelinda Sherlock ninth. Both women were members of the previous council. Their election means Hobart has avoided an all-male council.
Ben Lohberger, an incumbent councillor elected to the deputy lord mayor position, did not win a council seat. Tasmanian Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey said Lohberger would not be able to take up the deputy mayor position when the new council sits.
Under local government regulations, the elected councillors will fill the vacancy through a ballot at their first meeting. Hawkey said the situation was rare, estimating it had occurred about four times since 1994, generally at smaller and regional councils. Veteran journalist Charles Wooley was elected Lord Mayor.
The final council make-up is Charles Wooley, John Kelly, Bill Harvey, Ryan Posselt, Simon Behrakis, Harvey Lennon, Louise Elliot, Mike Dutta and Zelinda Sherlock.
