According to BBC News, two men died in custody at HMP Ranby, a Category C training and resettlement prison near Retford in Nottinghamshire, on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed the deaths. Nottinghamshire Police said it was working with the Prison Service to establish the circumstances surrounding them.

Detective Inspector James Oakton said an investigation had been launched following the deaths of the two prisoners. He said police and the Prison Service were working closely and that a thorough investigation was under way.

Oakton said the families of those involved were being supported and offered his thoughts to them. East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it attended HMP Ranby on both Wednesday and Thursday, but said it would not comment further because of the ongoing investigation.

The Prison Service said the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman would investigate, as it does in all deaths in custody, and that it would respond to the ombudsman’s findings in due course.
