Journalist Ashraf Helmy urged the head of the Media Syndicate, Dr. Tarek Saada, to expel presenter Dina Al-Masri from the syndicate after she insisted on her statements insulting Christians, denigrating their faith, and refused to retract or apologize. On her personal Facebook page she wrote, “I stand by my opinion and hold fast to every word I said,” and reacted to the suspension of her show with the comment “I don’t care.” This followed the decisive action by the production company behind the program “Hawadit ‘Ala Al-Makshouf,” which airs on the Al Mehwar satellite channel: the company permanently stopped the show, terminated its contract with the presenter, and banned any further dealings with her.Helmy called for enforcement of the press and media regulatory law and the Supreme Council for Media’s rules in Al-Masri’s case, urging the syndicate to complete the company’s action by striking her off the register. He referenced Article 17 of the law concerning journalists’ and media professionals’ duties, which requires them to adhere to the principles and values of the constitution, comply with the law, respect the professional code of honor and the editorial policy of the outlet they work with, and observe the profession’s ethics and traditions without violating citizens’ rights or freedoms.He also cited Article 19, which prohibits newspapers, media outlets, or websites from publishing or broadcasting false news, or from calling for or inciting lawbreaking, violence, or hatred; it forbids content that discriminates between citizens, promotes racism or bigotry, or includes attacks on individuals’ honor, insults, slander, or the profaning of heavenly religions or religious beliefs.Helmy said the presenter’s conduct reflected a form of religious superiority practiced by some without governmental oversight, and he argued that striking Dina Al-Masri from the syndicate would serve as a firm, deterrent lesson to any media professionals who might insult others, spread hatred, or provoke sectarian discord among the nation’s citizens.
