A group of avid book worms that meet at Chester Hill Library and Knowledge Centre are celebrating their 100th read and are encouraging others not to judge a book by its cover.
Having read ten books a year for nearly ten years, the group of 18 members love getting stuck into a page-turner and discussing novel ideas.
They’ve welcomed many new members from different backgrounds and generations over the years, all with the shared passion for reading.
Founding member Susanne Murray, 72, started the book club in her home when she retired, before moving it to the library and opening it up to the community.
“I straight away realised that for some people who may have been living on their own, it was an important opportunity to socialise. We’ve been going strong ever since,” Ms Murray said.
“We have a great mix of people and the numbers have really increased over the years. The big thing coming out of it is that they have formed really strong friendships.
“One lady who moved out Blacktown way still sources the book we are reading from her local library and joins us over zoom.
“Nobody wants to miss a meeting because everybody is interested in what the other readers have to say.”
The group celebrated their 100-book milestone at their monthly gathering with non-alcoholic sparkling wine and book worm cupcakes. All hundred books were on display and the members were astounded by the huge pile of books they had read.
The rest of the story is still unwritten for this club, who intend to read many more books and welcome new members into the future.
“There’s no end in sight and I’m sure we’ll be going for another ten years!” Ms Murray said.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek encouraged community members to switch off the technology and join a book club.
“We have more than thirteen book clubs running at our libraries and for those who can’t make it in person, there are online options as well,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“They’re a fantastic opportunity to take time out of your busy life, have enriching conversations and meet new people.”
