The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is set to relocate its Adelaide office to a new site on Franklin Street, previously occupied by the old bus station, by 2031. This move is part of a broader initiative that includes plans for affordable housing on the same site. According to ABC News, South Australia’s Premier Peter Malinauskas announced that the new development will also house Country Arts SA, State Theatre Company South Australia, and State Opera South Australia.
The current ABC building, located in Collinswood, could potentially be redeveloped into apartments, similar to the nearby Watson building in Walkerville. ABC’s managing director, Hugh Marks, noted that while the Collinswood site has its merits, it requires significant renovation work due to age and the presence of asbestos. He emphasized the need for a balance between preserving heritage and facilitating modern development.
The Collinswood building, opened in 1974, is not heritage-listed but is currently zoned for employment rather than residential use. Premier Malinauskas clarified that no formal application has yet been submitted to rezone the site for housing. He indicated that any changes would undergo a thorough review process to ensure compliance with zoning regulations.
The state government is partnering with urban development agency Renewal SA to advance the plans for the new ABC hub, contingent upon public works approval. The site has been earmarked for mixed-use development, including affordable housing options, with a previous commitment to build 392 apartments, 35 percent of which are expected to be affordable.
As the ABC prepares for this significant transition, the focus remains on creating a vibrant community space that includes both residential and commercial elements. The investment of $51 million from the state government aims to enhance facilities and infrastructure for the arts and cultural institutions moving into the new hub, marking a transformative period for the area.
