According to France 24, the death toll from a drone strike on the Amiet market in Abyei district has risen to 153. A local official told AFP on Wednesday that the number was likely even higher after the attack, which took place on Monday.

Abyei is an area disputed between Sudan and South Sudan. Authorities in the district said the market strike involved multiple munitions and was carried out by the Sudanese army. The reported death toll places the attack among the most serious consequences described by local authorities in the disputed area.

France 24’s Mark Owen spoke with Jan Pospisil, a Sudan Affairs Analyst at the Peace and Conflict Resolution Evidence Platform, about the strike and the wider war. Pospisil said the Sudanese army had long sought to portray itself internationally as humane while the RSF was committing atrocities.

“Here we see very clearly that there is not much difference between these two,” Pospisil said, referring to the Sudanese army and the RSF. He said neither side takes acknowledgement of human life in the war.
