Arabic version: الممثلة المشهورة ماري بيث هيرت تتوفي عن عمر يناهز 79 عامًا
Mary Beth Hurt, star of *Interiors* and *The World According to Garp*, has died of Alzheimer’s aged 79. The news was confirmed through a Facebook post by her daughter, Molly Schrader, and her husband, writer and director Paul Schrader. According to The Guardian, the family expressed their grief while also finding solace in the fact that she is no longer suffering.
Born Mary Beth Supinger, Hurt had a celebrated career that began with her film debut in Woody Allen’s 1978 drama *Interiors*. She gained recognition for her performances and was nominated for three Tony Awards for her work on Broadway, including in *Crimes of the Heart*, *Trelawny of the Wells*, and *Benefactors*.
Hurt was married to actor William Hurt from 1971 to 1982 and later collaborated with her second husband, Paul Schrader, on films like *Affliction* and *Light Sleeper*. Throughout her career, she selectively chose roles, often favoring those that offered depth and interest. She remarked in a 1989 interview that she turned down many roles due to a lack of substance.
In addition to her notable films, including *Slaves of New York* and *The Age of Innocence*, Hurt also shared her preference for ensemble casts over leading roles, finding secondary parts to be more intriguing. Her later works included *Young Adult*, *Lady in the Water*, and *The Exorcism of Emily Rose*.
In recent years, her health had declined, and in 2023, Paul Schrader announced that she had been moved to a memory care facility in New York. Her passing marks the end of a significant chapter in American cinema, where she was celebrated for her grace and talent both on screen and stage.
