According to ABC News, a 38-year-old Adelaide man has been charged over an alleged $5 million dishonesty plot against the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The man is a director of a registered NDIS provider and was arrested by Australian Federal Police officers at Adelaide Airport on Friday as he prepared to leave the country.
The charges followed an investigation by the federal government’s Fraud Fusion Taskforce, which began in March. The investigation was launched after the National Disability Insurance Agency found that unauthorised access to protected records of NDIS participants had taken place.
The AFP charged the man with one count of dealing with the proceeds of crime allegedly fraudulently claimed from the NDIS. He was also charged with one count of soliciting protected agency information from an NDIA staff member.
According to the AFP, the alleged proceeds-of-crime offence carries a maximum penalty of 25 years’ imprisonment. The protected-information offence carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment. The man has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.
In June, a 48-year-old woman became the first person charged over the same alleged plot. Fraud Fusion Taskforce investigators had searched premises in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, including a business in Prospect and homes in Mawson Lakes and Blakeview.
