According to ABC News, Adelaide moved into the AFL top four for the first time this season with a 23.7 (145) to 11.7 (73) victory over Essendon, while Melbourne kept its top-four hopes alive by beating Gold Coast 18.6 (114) to 16.9 (105). Richmond also defeated West Coast 12.12 (84) to 9.19 (73) at the MCG.

West Coast number-one pick Willem Duursma broke down in tears after the Richmond loss and was comforted by teammate Harley Reid. The result lifted Richmond off the bottom of the ladder, while Essendon was left last after its defeat to Adelaide.

Riley Thilthorpe led Adelaide with five goals and 10 marks. Izak Rankine had 23 disposals, 10 score involvements and three goals, while captain Jordan Dawson collected 30 disposals and nine clearances. Peter Wright kicked six goals for Essendon. Crows defender James Borlase did not play the second half because of hamstring awareness, while Angus Clarke was ruled out with concussion after an earlier left-knee hyperextension.

At Carrara Stadium, Melbourne captain Max Gawn recorded 25 disposals, 10 marks, 33 hit-outs and nine clearances in the nine-point win. Harrison Petty and Jacob van Rooyen kicked three goals each, with Petty scoring after the siren at the end of the third quarter. Gold Coast suffered its 10th straight loss despite 34 disposals from John Noble and 30 from Matt Rowell. Sam Collins and Blake Howes were sent for X-rays after separate incidents.

Adelaide, now 13-7, will host Richmond at Adelaide Oval, while Essendon faces Geelong at Kardinia Park. Melbourne hosts ladder leader Fremantle next weekend, and Gold Coast travels to Canberra to play GWS.
