Adelaide University students have expressed dissatisfaction with the institution’s communication following a cybersecurity breach affecting the Canvas learning platform. The breach, which occurred last week, impacted numerous educational institutions worldwide, including both Adelaide and Flinders universities. According to ABC News, students reported confusion and frustration as they struggled to access course materials during the outage.

The Canvas platform was taken offline after being breached by the hacking group ShinyHunters, leading to significant disruptions for students. While Adelaide University announced that access to Canvas was restored by 5 PM yesterday, Flinders University expected to be “fully operational” today. Students criticized Adelaide University for not providing timely updates about the incident, with some learning about the breach through friends or online articles rather than official communications.

Ethan Brown, a second-year mechanical engineering student, voiced concerns over the university’s handling of the situation, stating it was troubling to learn about the breach indirectly. He noted that the breach followed recent issues stemming from the university’s merger with the University of South Australia, making the timing particularly unfortunate for students already facing technical difficulties.

Other students echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the disruption caused by the outage. Shannon Schmidt, studying international relations and arts, remarked on the negative impact on course submissions, while linguistics student Bailey Fry noted that many students were stressed due to an upcoming test due to the confusion.

In response to the breach, Adelaide University has taken measures to ensure fairness for students, including temporary assessment extensions. The university stated that it is prioritizing the safety of its community and is actively working with Canvas and government agencies to address the situation. Flinders University also confirmed that it has been restoring access to Canvas and has provided extensions for students unable to submit work during the outage.
