According to ABC News, the Australian Services Union says Bendigo and Adelaide Bank is proposing 137 redundancies in an ongoing restructure, with Adelaide workers expected to account for more losses than staff in other city and regional locations.

The proposed redundancies are part of 299 job changes across the bank’s Consumer Lending Operations and Customer Care divisions. Bendigo Bank said its planned changes were not finalised and that it continues to review its business operations and processes.

The restructure began in April, when the bank announced partnerships with IT service provider Infosys and agentic AI company Genpact. The union said about 445 Bendigo Bank positions had been “lost or reduced through restructures” since January 2025, and said forthcoming losses had “a strong documented relationship to AI, automation or broader technological change”.

ASU SA-NT branch secretary Ella Waters said the bank had told the union it was making efficiencies through redundancies as part of a partnership with an offshore technological company. She said the union was concerned about whether workers would be replaced by AI and about jobs being sent offshore.

A Bendigo Bank spokesperson did not confirm whether AI would replace workers. The spokesperson said the detailed design for all impacted areas was yet to be finalised, while expected process and operational improvements would lead to workforce changes. The bank said it was committed to supporting affected employees, including exploring redeployment opportunities where possible.
