Kay Reid, the mother of AFL players Sam and Ben Reid, has disclosed her long-standing relationship with Dezi Freeman, a man convicted of killing two police officers. According to ABC News, Reid revealed that she stored firearms for Freeman at her Buckland property and assisted in bringing his wife, Mali, to Australia through her travel agency.

In an exclusive interview, Reid emphasized the depth of her friendship with Freeman’s family, which dates back two decades. She clarified, however, that she never aided Freeman while he was evading law enforcement. “We were friends as the whole community were … within Porepunkah and Bright and the greater north-east,” she stated.

Freeman killed two police officers in Porepunkah in August 2025. He managed to elude authorities for seven months before being killed in a standoff with police. Reid’s Buckland home has been searched multiple times by police investigating Freeman’s movements during his time as a fugitive.

The latest search occurred this week, further intensifying scrutiny on Reid and her husband Bruce’s involvement with Freeman. They have previously stated that they were not complicit in Freeman’s actions and expressed frustration at being treated with suspicion by law enforcement. Reid noted that their property sustained significant damage during police raids, for which they received compensation.

Investigators are currently focused on determining who assisted Freeman while he was on the run, including identifying individuals who may have provided him with financial or logistical support. The deaths of the two police officers are under investigation by a coroner, along with the circumstances surrounding Freeman’s death during the police standoff.
