Bill Appleby has resigned from his position on the board of Albury Wodonga Health, effective Wednesday. This decision follows multiple votes of no confidence from doctors and nurses regarding the hospital’s executive leadership, particularly over safety concerns.

According to ABC News, the hospital board announced that Andrew Way would serve as the interim CEO starting Wednesday. Appleby expressed gratitude for the staff and volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality care, while board chair Jonathan Green acknowledged his leadership during challenging times.

The resignation comes after more than 100 doctors passed a vote of no confidence in Albury Wodonga Health’s executive leadership after a number of senior staff were sacked. Concerns have been raised about a controversial $558 million redevelopment of the hospital, with staff alleging that colleagues were let go for voicing criticisms.

The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association has echoed these safety concerns, indicating a climate of fear regarding patient safety reporting. Union delegate Kim Cole highlighted the longstanding issues with safety, governance, and transparency within the organization.

Community advocacy group Better Border Health has called for further resignations among AWH executives, emphasizing the need for cultural reform within the health service. The Australian Medical Association Victoria has characterized Appleby’s departure as a potential turning point for rebuilding trust between staff and management.

Victorian Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas recognized the need for significant improvement in workplace culture at AWH and expressed confidence in Professor Way’s ability to address these challenges. She emphasized the importance of attracting and retaining staff as the border region continues to grow.
