According to BBC News, Algeria is severing diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, citing what its foreign ministry described as “provocative or hostile” acts by the Gulf state.

Algeria’s foreign ministry said it had made efforts to engage the Emirati side and warned of consequences from what it called “regrettable and unjustified behaviour”. The statement, shared by state media, gave no details about the reasons for the decision.

The ministry said the UAE’s behaviour had reached a point that could no longer be tolerated and that Algeria had exhausted all means of preserving bilateral relations. It said the UAE ambassador was summoned and informed of the decision, with 48 hours to comply.

There was no direct response from the UAE. However, presidential diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash wrote on X that diplomatic relations were not based on “riddles and signals that require decoding”. He said diplomacy required rationality, communication and clarity of interests, adding: “Ambiguity is not a policy, and noise does not compensate for the absence of vision.”

Relations have become increasingly strained over regional disputes. Algeria rejects normalising relations with Israel, while the UAE and Morocco established ties with Israel under the US-brokered Abraham Accords. The UAE also supports Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara, while Algeria backs the Polisario Front, which seeks an independent state for the Sahrawi people.
