According to The Guardian, Australia’s Wallabies suffered a 13th consecutive defeat to New Zealand in a Bledisloe Cup Test at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, exposing a large gap between the sides a year before they are due to meet again in the city at a World Cup.
The Wallabies had entered the match after beating world No 1 South Africa last month and going unbeaten in six Tests. However, their start against the All Blacks unravelled quickly. Australia kicked two restarts out on the full and failed to convert four final-pass opportunities in the opening 10 minutes. New Zealand led 22-0 in almost as many minutes before the hosts responded.
At half-time, New Zealand held a six-tries-to-one advantage and had made 18 line breaks to Australia’s one. The Wallabies missed 21 tackles, compared with one by the All Blacks, and conceded eight turnovers to two. Damian McKenzie missed three of four conversions, while New Zealand were without Ardie Savea, Ruben Love, Richie Mo’unga and Jordie Barrett.
Wallabies coach Les Kiss described the first half as damaging, saying: “None of us accept 22-0.” Captain Harry Wilson said he was “gutted” and called the series “very disappointing”, adding that the team would need to regroup and improve before its spring tour. Australia next face England at Twickenham on 8 November, followed by Tests against Scotland and Wales.
There were limited positives for Australia. Rookie fly-half Declan Meredith impressed in attack and came close to scoring twice, while Max Jorgensen remained inventive despite missed tackles. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii ran hard and Wilson brought intensity, but the All Blacks’ clinical display left the Wallabies facing major work before the upcoming fixtures.
