Parramatta Aquatic Centre (PAC) and Lake Parramatta have both starred at one of the engineering industry’s night of nights, recognised for feats of engineering excellence.
PAC took out the top prize, the Minister’s award, while Lake Parramatta’s upgraded swimming area was named the winner of the New Or Improved Techniques category at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) NSW & ACT Engineering Excellence Awards.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said it’s another proud achievement for the global City.
“PAC and Lake Parramatta’s swimming area upgrades have made a big splash, enhancing our iconic water views through standout excellence in engineering and construction,” Cr Zaiter said.

“Our aquatic centre was built into Mays Hill and is designed to fit in with its surrounds.
“It’s a credit to everyone who worked on PAC, making this one of the best facilities in Australia.”
Engineers and designers successfully limited the impacts on the world heritage site it was built on, while delivering a state-of-the-art aquatic centre.
The centre provides facilities including a 10-lane 50m outdoor pool, an internal 25m pool, a learn to swim, splash play zone, sauna, spa and steam room.
Meanwhile, Lake Parramatta features a new sandy beach, supported by an underwater retaining wall, creating a gentle slope into the water.
“It was no mean feat to overcome the engineering challenges facing workers at Lake Parramatta, and I’m proud to say the results speak for themselves with improved safety and accessibility for our community,” Cr Zaiter said.
Access upgrades include new footpaths, traction-treated steps, handrails for improved mobility access, a formal lifeguard platform improving swimmer supervision and safety, new seating, and updated safety signage. The IPWEA NSW & ACT Engineering Excellence Awards showcase the outstanding projects local government and individuals have accomplished, which directly impact the lives of their communities
