According to BBC News, Matty Ashton scored a hat-trick as Warrington Wolves beat Hull Kingston Rovers 35-12 in a Super League play-off eliminator, ending the Robins’ reign as champions. Warrington will travel to face Leeds Rhinos at AMT Headingley on Friday, 25 September for a place in the Grand Final.

The Wolves were on top for much of the match but led only 12-6 at half-time. Ben Currie scored after Joe Burgess fumbled early, with Ewan Irwin converting and later adding a penalty. Hull KR responded when Arthur Mourgue broke from close to his own line and found Joe Burgess in support. Warrington immediately struck back as Ashton finished on the right flank for his 100th Super League try.

Hull KR’s task became harder early in the second half when Peta Hiku was sent off following a video review of an incident involving George Williams. Ashton’s second try was followed by a Dean Hadley score, which brought the 12-man Robins within four points. However, James Bentley stole the ball as Hadley appeared to be heading for the posts, and Ashton supported the break to complete his hat-trick.

Albert Hopoate added an acrobatic finish, Williams kicked a late drop-goal and Toby King crossed on his final home appearance before joining London Broncos. Warrington had also scored through Currie and Hopoate, while Irwin landed five goals. Defeat ended Willie Peters’ time as Hull KR coach before his move to new NRL franchise PNG Chiefs next season. Wakefield Trinity will play Wigan Warriors in the other semi-final the following evening.
