Arabic version: دور عاصم منير في وقف إطلاق النار بين الولايات المتحدة وإيران يبرز تأثير باكستان
Asim Munir became Pakistan’s army chief in November 2022, and after the four-day conflict with India last year, he was elevated as field marshal.
According to Al Jazeera, hours before a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran was due to expire, US President Donald Trump announced its extension, crediting Munir and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for their mediation efforts.
The ceasefire was initially brokered after intense negotiations led by Munir, who engaged directly with US and Iranian officials. His diplomatic initiatives began to take shape following a four-day war between India and Pakistan in April 2025, which marked a significant turning point in his career.
The conflict was ignited by the tragic killing of 26 tourists in Baisaran Valley in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India attributed to Pakistan, leading to military action from both sides. Munir’s leadership during this crisis garnered him a promotion to field marshal and subsequently the newly established position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) in Pakistan. His strategic role in facilitating communication between the US and Iran has positioned him as a key player in regional stability.
In the aftermath of the war, Munir’s military and diplomatic engagements have been noted by international analysts, who see his ascent as part of a broader trend in which Pakistan seeks to assert its influence in global affairs, especially amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. His interactions with senior US officials, including Trump, have further solidified his status as a significant military leader on the world stage.
