Arabic version: تهمة محاولة القتل بعد طعن موسيقي في نيوكاسل
A man has been charged with attempted murder following an incident in which musician Greg Bryce was allegedly stabbed at Club Merewether in Newcastle. The 69-year-old suffered stab wounds to his chest and back after performing a solo gig.
According to ABC News, Yury Skrynnik, a 53-year-old Stockton resident, stands accused of attempting to kill Bryce. Police reported that the two men were known to each other, and Skrynnik has also been charged with contravening an apprehended domestic violence order.
Emergency services were called to the scene, where a doctor at the club provided initial treatment before paramedics arrived. Bryce was subsequently taken to the hospital, where he is currently in a serious but stable condition. His manager, Yianni Moratidis, confirmed that Bryce underwent surgery and is recovering on a ward.
The incident has shocked the local music community, with fellow musicians expressing their disbelief. Former Screaming Jets guitarist Grant Walmsley described Bryce as a beloved figure, stating, “People who know Greg would know he is just one of the most beautiful people in the world.” Another local artist, Brien McVernon, remarked on Bryce’s non-violent nature, emphasizing the unexpectedness of the attack.
Skrynnik was arrested early this morning at a residence in Stockton and taken to Newcastle Police Station. He did not apply for bail during his court appearance and has been remanded in custody. Police have established a crime scene at the club and are urging any witnesses to come forward. Skrynnik is scheduled to return to court in May.
