According to The Guardian, Australia defeated England 66-47 in a Commonwealth Games Pool A netball match at the Hydro in Glasgow, extending the Diamonds’ record against their rivals at the Games to seven wins in eight meetings. Sophie Garbin scored 41 goals from 42 attempts as Australia’s attack quickly exposed England’s defence.

Australia took an early 10-4 lead, with Kiera Austin dictating play. England withdrew Sasha Glasgow before the end of the opening quarter, and Lois Pearson’s move to goal attack briefly helped the Roses recover to 13-9. Australia nevertheless led 18-11 at the first break.

England made further changes in the second period, bringing Jayda Pechová into defence and moving captain Fran Williams to goal defence. The Roses opened the quarter with a 4-1 burst, but Jamie-Lee Price and Austin restored Australia’s control. Liv Tchine remained England’s brightest attacking outlet, while Courtney Bruce and Jo Weston forced difficult feeds and turnovers. Australia led 35-24 at half-time.

The Diamonds outscored England 21-11 in the third quarter, capitalising on turnovers, offensive contacts and loose passes to build a 21-goal advantage before the final period. Austin finished with 15 goals, 19 assists and 17 feeds. England marginally won the final quarter, but Australia’s lead had already decided the contest.

Garbin said the match was physical and praised the atmosphere in Glasgow. Williams said England were far off their best and had struggled to build momentum, adding that the team had to keep pursuing “small wins and little fights” after the game opened up in the second half.
