According to BBC News, Scotland suffered a 56-12 defeat to Australia in their WXV Global Series match in Sydney, their eighth straight loss and fourth in the new competition. Australia recorded their second victory, both against Scotland, after defeats by England and France.
Scotland made a bright start under caretaker head coach Dave Butcher despite losing Sarah Bonar to illness shortly before kick-off. Hollie Cunningham replaced the Harlequins lock, while Katie Buchanan marked her first international start by beating a defender and scoring in the fifth minute.
Australia levelled in the 17th minute through hooker Brittany Merlo before Maya Stewart added another try six minutes later, with Samantha Wood converting both. After Meryl Smith was sent to the sin-bin, Desiree Miller, Amelia Whitaker and Ellis scored to establish a 35-5 half-time lead.
Miller crossed again two minutes after the restart, but Scotland responded when captain Rachel Malcolm scored close to the line and Helen Nelson converted. Whitaker added her second try with 15 minutes remaining, and Eva Karpani completed the scoring in the closing seconds after Eva Donaldson received a yellow card.
