According to ABC News, an Australian woman feared missing after Nepal’s devastating flood on Wednesday has contacted her family.

Cara Severino, 26, reached her parents, Debbie and Frank Servino, from Gosainkunda after becoming stranded at Kyangjia Gompa with other hikers. Her parents said Kyangjia Gompa was not in the direct path of the floodwaters.

They said the group was attempting to reach Kathmandu on foot and were awaiting further information about her safe return. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was working with local authorities to locate the woman, who had last been reported in a remote area several days’ hike from Kathmandu, and provide consular assistance.

With Ms Severino having made contact, DFAT said 38 Australians remained unaccounted for. More than 1,400 people in total remain missing, while the department has received more than 400 calls related to the disaster.

A Sydney family of four, including two young boys, remains missing after travelling in the region with a tour group. Rescue operations in the valleyed Himalayan region have been complicated by treacherous terrain, with environmental anthropologist Austin Lord saying recovery efforts would remain “brutal and slow”.
