According to ABC News, Abbey Caldwell won gold ahead of Jess Hull and Claudia Hollingsworth as Australia swept the medals in the first female Commonwealth Games mile in history at Scotstoun Stadium.

Caldwell broke clear with 200 metres remaining in a slow final and crossed the line in 4 minutes and 39.31 seconds. Hull took silver, while Hollingsworth found room late in the race to pass Naomi Korir and secure bronze.

The result followed a contentious Australian championships 1,500m race in April, when Hollingsworth tripped Hull and held up Caldwell. Hollingsworth was disqualified after protests from Hull and Caldwell, while Sarah Billings was installed as national champion. Billings raced only the 800m in Glasgow and won bronze.

Hull said Australia’s middle-distance runners were a threat internationally and identified world championships as the next target. Caldwell said the sweep had “put [them] on the map” and pointed to future Olympic and world medals.

Earlier, Australian 20-year-old Cameron Myers finished disappointed after Scottish world record holder Josh Kerr controlled a chaotic men’s mile final. Myers said, “He smashed me,” after being boxed in before Kerr opened a gap with half a lap remaining.
