Police in the US state of Ohio have rescued 16 children living in conditions of squalor in a dilapidated home. The children were found confined to a room measuring approximately 3.5 square metres, surrounded by human waste and debris, according to ABC News.

The children, who ranged in age from one-and-a-half to 18 years old, were reportedly not enrolled in school, and many appeared to be suffering from developmental issues. An 18-year-old among them, who was developmentally disabled, could not write her name. Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the scene as “disgusting,” stating, “Most of our livestock was kept in better conditions than the children.”

Authorities discovered the children while executing a search warrant for an unrelated investigation. It was revealed that no one outside the family seemed to be aware of the children’s existence, raising questions about their living conditions over the past four years.

Seven of the rescued children were taken to hospitals in Columbus, with one reported in critical condition. The children are now in the temporary custody of the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. Four adults, including the children’s parents and two grandparents, face felony child endangerment charges.

Neighbors expressed shock, stating they had seen “no kids at all” since the family moved in. Investigators noted that the family had been elusive, avoiding the establishment of medical and governmental records. The community, located in one of Ohio’s poorest counties, is grappling with the implications of this distressing situation.
