Arabic version: إطلاق سراح رجل متهم بالاعتداء على ضابط شرطة بكفالة
A 23-year-old man, Timothy Mizzi, has been granted bail after allegedly attacking a police officer in the New South Wales Hunter Valley. The incident has sparked outrage within the police community. According to ABC News, Mizzi was stopped by police for random testing when he returned a negative breath test but allegedly refused a drug test.
The situation escalated when Mizzi attempted to drive away, prompting Senior Constable Thomas Anderson to intervene by removing the keys from the vehicle. A scuffle ensued, resulting in the officer suffering multiple injuries to his face. A bystander assisted in the confrontation, and police subsequently deployed a taser to subdue Mizzi before his arrest.
Initially, Mizzi was refused bail and charged with multiple offenses, including assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention. However, following a court appearance, a magistrate granted him bail, leading to significant discontent among police officials. Ian Allwood, vice-president of the New South Wales Police Association, expressed disappointment, stating, “It doesn’t give us much faith in the justice system at all.”
Police Minister Yasmin Catley condemned the alleged attack, labeling it “vile and cowardly,” and emphasized that officers should not face violence while performing their duties. Senior Constable Anderson is reportedly recovering after a brief hospitalization, with colleagues describing him as a dedicated officer committed to his community. Mizzi is scheduled to reappear in court on April 22.
