According to ABC News, Bakamumu Marika AM, a senior leader of Arnhem Land’s Rirratjingu clan, has died. The Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation announced the death of its founder, long-serving chairman and current patron with “profound sadness”.

Mr Marika was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2022 for significant community service to north-east Arnhem Land. The corporation described him as a steadfast advocate for land rights who continued a major legacy in Australia’s Indigenous rights history, honouring and advancing the work of his forefathers.

A proud Rirratjingu man and cultural custodian, Mr Marika dedicated his life to advancing education, community development, economic participation and cultural preservation, the corporation said. It said his collective approach, guided by Yolŋu values and traditions, strengthened the community and encouraged younger generations to take pride in their culture and identity.

The corporation said it would honour Mr Marika’s legacy and be guided by his words about building opportunities for his people. In a statement, he urged unity and love among the Rirratjingu people and said they should “stand strong like the rock, Mandula”.
