Rapper Balendra Shah has emerged victorious in Nepal’s general election, defeating former Prime Minister Sharma KP Oli. The Election Commission confirmed on Saturday that Shah, 35, received 68,348 votes compared to Oli’s 18,734 in his parliamentary constituency. This election marks a pivotal moment in Nepal’s political landscape, occurring after violent protests led by youth activists toppled the previous government in September.

According to BBC News, Shah, known as Balen, resigned as mayor of Kathmandu in January to challenge Oli directly. His election represents a shift towards a new generation of politicians eager to engage Nepal’s youth, particularly the 800,000 first-time voters who played a crucial role in the election.

For over two decades, Nepal has been characterized by a series of coalition governments dominated by established parties, primarily two communist factions. The manifesto also included commitments to enhance healthcare coverage and stimulate economic growth, aiming to double Nepal’s GDP to $100 billion.

The rapper’s rise to political prominence follows a backdrop of unrest and demands for reform, particularly after protests erupted against Oli’s decision to ban social media platforms. Shah’s outspoken support for the demonstrators and criticism of the previous administration has resonated with a populace eager for change. His election could redefine the future of Nepal as it grapples with the aspirations and frustrations of its younger generation.
