According to ABC News, Bangladesh’s nine-wicket win over Australia in the first Test at Marrara Oval in Darwin has forced a reckoning for the world number one side, exposing problems that had been overlooked. Bangladesh, ranked ninth and without two of their best bowlers, produced patient batting, accurate slow bowling and disciplined cricket to claim a historic victory.

Bangladesh had not played a Test in Australia for 23 years, but captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led with composure and made key decisions throughout the match. Coach Phil Simmons was also credited for the team’s performance. Mominul Haque sealed the result by driving Beau Webster through the covers, prompting celebrations from the Bangladesh bench.

Australia’s shortcomings extended beyond the result. The side’s batting was marked by lazy stroke play and muddled decision-making, while dropped chances by Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon added to an uncharacteristically poor display. Marnus Labuschagne made scores of 1 and 31 in the match.

The loss comes before an unusually demanding 12 months for Australia, with as many as 20 Tests scheduled. After the Bangladesh series, Australia are due to travel to South Africa, host New Zealand and England, then tour India and England for the 2027 Ashes.

Australia now move to Mackay for the next Test, with questions remaining over the batting order, including Jake Weatherald’s position as opener. A win at Harrup Park may offer short-term relief, but the Darwin defeat has sharpened concerns about whether deeper issues in the Test side have been properly addressed.
