According to The Guardian, Australia ended the third day of the first men’s Test against Bangladesh at 161-4 in their second innings, still 67 runs behind at Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin. Cameron Green was unbeaten on 43 and Alex Carey on 19 at stumps, leaving Bangladesh in the stronger position after a demanding day for the home side.

Bangladesh resumed their first innings with a substantial advantage and were eventually bowled out for 426, establishing a 228-run lead over Australia. Mehidy Hasan Miraz made 65 before being caught by Carey off Josh Hazlewood, while Taskin Ahmed was dismissed for seven, also caught by Carey off Hazlewood. Hazlewood also removed Taijul Islam and Hasan Mahmud as Bangladesh’s lower order added valuable runs.

Australia’s reply began badly. Sam Weatherald was dismissed for a duck by Hasan Mahmud with the score at 4-1, and Travis Head followed for 17, bowled by Mahmud. At tea, Australia were 51-2 and trailed by 177. Marnus Labuschagne made 31 before Taijul Islam bowled him at 73-3.

Steve Smith provided resistance, reaching 44 as he and Green built Australia’s innings. But Mehidy struck a decisive blow when Smith returned a leading edge to the off-spinner, who completed a low catch to his right. Green then remained at the crease with Carey through the close, with the pair reducing the deficit from more than 100 runs to 67 by the end of the day.

Bangladesh will begin day four needing six Australian wickets to press for victory. Australia, with Green and Carey still together, will seek to erase the deficit and set Bangladesh a target in the final innings.
