According to BBC News, Thierno Barry scored against Newcastle for the second time in five days as Everton earned a deserved Premier League win at St James’ Park on Monday night. The 24-year-old has now matched the eight goals he scored in 41 appearances last season in only 12 games this season.

Only Erling Haaland, with 13, has scored more goals among Premier League players in all competitions this season than Barry’s eight. The French striker, signed from Villarreal last summer for £27m, is on his best run of form since arriving at Everton and has become particularly important as the club’s only recognised senior striker following Beto’s transfer to Fiorentina.

Barry had a difficult beginning on Merseyside, recording only one shot across his first 16 Everton games. Last month, he posted a video of himself breaking down during a private training session last season. His latest goal was followed by a knee-slide celebration and dance moves. “I was working a lot during the summer and now we can see the result,” Barry told Sky Sports. “The season is long but I’m happy to help the team with my goals.”

The Newcastle goal was controversial, with manager Matthias Jaissle telling BBC Sport there was “a clear foul on Fabian Schar” in the build-up. Barry also missed an earlier opportunity after getting on the end of Jarrad Branthwaite’s flick-on, scuffing his shot when through on goal. His eventual two-yard tap-in had an xG of 0.995.

Before the match, Barry had been involved in 15 of Everton’s 24 big chances in the Premier League, the highest proportion for any player in the division at 62.5%. Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher said Barry keeps going and scores despite missed chances, while manager David Moyes said Everton were “thrilled” their centre-forward was getting goals.
