The Barunga Festival, a prominent celebration of Indigenous culture in the Northern Territory, will be managed by a new team this year, following the decision to not renew the contract of the previous organizing agency, Sprout. This change has sparked claims of being ‘blindsided’ from Sprout, which has overseen the festival for the past three years. According to ABC News, this year’s festival will be held from June 5 to June 8.

The Bagala Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) has announced a strategic shift in managing the event, emphasizing community control and involvement. BAC Chief Executive Jarah Maraschio stated that the festival will be ‘bigger than ever’ this year, featuring two stages to accommodate additional performances, including a ‘battle-of-the-bands’ competition.

Sprout’s Chief Executive Anya Lorimer expressed surprise at the decision, noting that her team had begun preparations for the 2026 festival and were expecting their contract to be renewed. She highlighted the logistical complexities involved in organizing such a large event, given its remote location and the need for significant infrastructure.

While BAC is optimistic about the festival’s future, concerns have been raised about the transition process. Senior Aboriginal cultural leader Conway Wirrpanda-Blanasi criticized the lack of transparency in the management change, suggesting that Sprout should have been given a chance to train local organizers.

Despite the excitement surrounding the festival’s new direction, BAC has yet to secure federal funding for this year’s event, although they are actively pursuing various options. Previous festivals have received substantial support from both the Northern Territory government and federal agencies, including a grant of $250,000 for the 2025 festival.
