Shannon Trew, 42, was coaching a primary school aged child when he abused her, the District Court heard. According to ABC News, Trew admitted to two counts of indecently dealing with a child between the age of 13 and 16, as well as possessing child exploitation material.
The court heard that the incidents took place between July and August 2024 while Trew was providing one-on-one coaching to the victim on the grounds of a primary school in Perth’s east. During a session, he allegedly asked whether she was wearing underwear and rubbed her private area. A school cleaner reportedly observed the victim’s legs over the offender’s, leading to parental reports to the police.
Following an investigation, authorities discovered more than 1,000 images of child exploitation material on Trew’s phone, including 600 classified as the most severe, which involved infants. At the time of the offenses, Trew was also working as a substitute teacher at another school.
Trew’s lawyer requested a psychiatric evaluation to explore any potential links between a psychological disorder and his behavior. However, the judge denied the bail request, emphasizing the seriousness of the offenses and Trew’s guilty pleas. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on September 23.
