According to The Guardian, Bella Ramsey says they have often felt “too old and too young at the same time” after beginning professional acting at 11. The 22-year-old non-binary actor, who uses they/them pronouns, first appeared as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones and went on to roles in The Worst Witch, Time and Catherine Called Birdy.

Ramsey became internationally known as Ellie in HBO’s The Last of Us, playing an orphan who forms a father-daughter-like bond with Joel, portrayed by Pedro Pascal. The show first aired in 2023, and Ramsey received nominations including two Emmys, two Golden Globes, two Critics Choice awards, an Actor award and a Bafta. The season one finale was watched by 32 million people.

They told the newspaper that working from a young age made being called an actor or having a career feel strange. Ramsey joined the Television Workshop in Nottingham at 11 after initially failing to get in, describing that first rejection as “a good lesson.” Their early work on The Worst Witch also involved spending 16 weeks away from home over the summer, living in a hotel room while working.

In the film Sunny Dancer, Ramsey plays Ivy, a teenage cancer survivor attending a summer camp with other young people affected by cancer. They said they were initially nervous about fitting in with a cast closer to their age, but found the experience liberating. Ramsey said they had long suspected they were neurodivergent and received a formal diagnosis while filming the first season of The Last of Us.
