Arabic version: سوء تقدير بن غوريون للهوية الفلسطينية والمقاومة
David Ben-Gurion, the chairman of the Jewish Agency, underestimated the Palestinian identity during the establishment of Israel in 1948. He believed that the Palestinian population would simply flee and assimilate into neighboring Arab countries, leading to what he termed a self-resolving refugee problem. However, this assumption proved to be profoundly incorrect.
According to Al Jazeera, the Palestinian national cause has only strengthened over time. The survivors of the Nakba of 1948 have instilled a sense of historical justice and rights among younger generations, encouraging them to remember their past rather than forget it. The persistence of this collective memory has kept the Palestinian cause alive, despite Israeli policies aimed at dispossession and violence.
The Israeli government’s attempts to isolate Palestinian refugees and redefine their plight as merely humanitarian have failed. Instead, these efforts have galvanized the Palestinian people, making refugee camps centers of resistance and activism. Palestinian refugees played crucial roles in the first and second Intifadas, and they continue to be central figures in the struggle against occupation.
The ongoing violence and displacement perpetrated by Israel have not achieved the intended subjugation. Rather, they have intensified Palestinian resolve, particularly evident in the Gaza Strip, where 80 percent of the population are refugees. The recent escalation of violence in Gaza has only underscored the failure of Ben-Gurion’s predictions regarding the Palestinians.
Today, the Israeli government acknowledges the threat posed by the descendants of Nakba survivors, revealing a strategic failure in its approach to the Palestinian issue. The brutality employed by Israel has paradoxically deepened the roots of Palestinian identity and resistance, transforming the struggle into a global moral question that resonates far beyond the region. Ben-Gurion’s legacy, therefore, stands as a testament to the resilience of the Palestinian cause against the backdrop of historical injustice.
