According to ABC News, former England captain Ben Stokes will play in the upcoming Big Bash League season after signing with the Adelaide Strikers. The club confirmed the all-rounder’s move after reports earlier in the week had suggested he would join the side.
The Strikers said they were looking forward to drawing on Stokes’s “world-class talent” and his ability to produce “match-winning performances with both bat and ball”. Adelaide head coach Tim Paine described Stokes as one of the greatest all-rounders in the game and said the club was thrilled to add a player of his ability to its squad.
Stokes said joining the Strikers was an opportunity he “couldn’t pass up”. He called Adelaide Oval an incredible cricket venue, described the Big Bash as a fantastic competition and said the Strikers had an exciting group. He said he wanted to create special memories with the team and give the club’s fans plenty to cheer about.
The 35-year-old retired from international cricket in June and will be available for the full BBL summer, the Strikers said. He previously had a BBL stint with the Melbourne Renegades in 2015. Stokes made his Test debut in Adelaide in 2013 and captained England in its 4-1 Ashes series defeat to Australia in the 2025/26 summer.
Recognised as one of the current era’s most impactful cricketers, Stokes scored more than 11,000 international runs across Test, ODI and T20 formats. His notable performances included an unbeaten 135 against Australia at Headingley in 2019 and an unbeaten 84 against New Zealand in that summer’s World Cup final.
