A Bendigo teaching student has been charged with offences relating to online child abuse material. The Australian Federal Police confirmed that Daniel Grey, a 26-year-old trainee teacher, was arrested on May 19 as part of an ongoing investigation. He faced the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on May 26.

According to ABC News, both Bendigo South East College and Kennington Primary School informed parents and carers about the charges against Grey, who has previously held roles at both institutions. He served as the school council president at Kennington Primary School and worked in a non-educational role at Jenny’s Early Learning Centre.

In communications to families, school officials reassured them that there is no risk to public safety and that Grey’s charges do not relate to any students from either school. The principal of Bendigo South East College, Justin Matt, emphasized that Grey was supervised during his two-week placement at the school, which ended on May 19.

Jenny’s Early Learning Centre’s manager, Mikaela Johnson, stated that they were made aware of the charges through “unofficial channels” and confirmed that there were no allegations connected to Grey’s professional capacity at the centre. An internal investigation has been initiated, but Johnson noted that Grey did not have unsupervised access to children.

Grey has resigned from his position on the school council and is currently barred from any employment or volunteering at schools due to the ongoing legal situation. The case is scheduled to return to Bendigo Magistrates’ Court in September.
