According to BBC News, Binance customers withdrew a net $3.64bn (£2.72bn) after the cryptocurrency exchange reopened on Sunday following a record hack. The company had suspended all transactions after the incident affected $6.3bn worth of digital assets.

Binance said that between 06:00 and 15:30 GMT on 1 November, it processed $4.649bn in withdrawals and $1.01bn in deposits. It said an initial spike in withdrawals later declined and that activity was stabilising as expected.

The net withdrawals represented just over 2% of the $171bn in assets under Binance’s management, the company said. Withdrawals of more than two dozen major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, have resumed, while further services are due to return in phases after security checks are completed.

Major organisations including the FBI have accused North Korea of responsibility for the cyber-attack, described as the largest hack in history. The attack has been attributed to TraderTraitor, a North Korean cybercrime group also known as the Lazarus Group. The FBI published cryptocurrency wallet addresses linked to the group and urged industry partners to block transactions involving them.

Binance said it had covered around 95% of assets stolen in the breach, while the remainder could take longer to source. It has said it will fully cover losses, using sources including its corporate treasury, futures insurance and emergency reserve funds. Early checks suggested a compromised laptop belonging to an engineer may have enabled hackers to make unauthorised transactions. Binance.com was affected, while its US-facing platform said it was not.
