According to ABC News, Brisbane overcame a dominant Fremantle by taking decisive moments late in the 2026 AFL grand final, rallying from a 17-point deficit in the final quarter to secure a third premiership under coach Chris Fagan.

Fagan said Fremantle had been the better side for longer periods, pointing to its advantage in clearances, contested possessions, inside 50s and shots. The Dockers controlled centre clearances in the first half, producing three goals from the middle, while also winning the marking battle.

Brisbane remained competitive through forward-half pressure. The Lions recorded nine first-half tackles inside 50, compared with Fremantle’s two, and held a four-goal advantage in scoring from front-half intercepts. The opening half featured nine lead changes, with the scores level at the main break.

Fremantle added 14 points in about five minutes during the third quarter, but Brisbane gradually shifted the contest. The Lions took 15 marks on the lead in the second half to Fremantle’s nil and restricted Caleb Serong to one clearance in the final period after he had collected 12 across the first three quarters.

Fremantle captain Alex Pearce suffered a game-ending Achilles injury, after which Brisbane scored three set-shot goals, having managed one before the injury. Will Ashcroft won three straight centre clearances late, while Logan Morris kicked accurately. Brisbane’s comeback was completed across four minutes and 18 seconds in the final quarter.
